So it happened

Filed under: Writing — jambrea @ 12:57 pm

The day arrived that I have been waiting on FOREVER!  I’ll start at the beginning.

First I was born…oh, wait, not that beginning.  🙂  heehee

Sometime last year I found the world of ebooks and it all started with Shiloh Walker.  Hers was the first yahoo group I joined.  Then I kept finding more yahoo groups and blogs.  As I found the blogs I also found writing contest.  I love to write.  When I was younger I wanted to be the youngest romance author every published.  Well…that didn’t happen and I stopped writing for a long time.  Once I found these contest I got back into writing.  But something still wasn’t clicking.  Then one day something happened.  My characters started talking to me and not letting me stop their story.  And the day came when I could write the end and finish my first story!  I’ve had a lot of help along the way.  Valerie Tibbs and Joy Roett (as seen on her loop id) read my story for me to help me make it better.  Then Jess Dee helped me get it to where it needed to be to sub and TA Chase was just an inspiration.  I’ve also had other support.  The Writeminded ladies:  Stephanie Tyler, Amy Knupp, Larissa Ione, Maya Banks aka Sharon Long & Jaci Burton.  But the support doesn’t end there.  I have my Joyfully Reviewed bunch and the Samhain Cafe who have pushed me along and they are waiting just like I am to hear back if Samhain will pick up my first story.

Now during all this time I was trying to find a crit group or partners.  Nannette Hawkins and I had talked some and shared some loops to help us both along and then Nannette got involved with Lyrical Press and met Cindy Jacks.  Cindy was on some of my other yahoo groups as well, but I really didn’t get to know her until later.  The three of us joined a group, but it was just too big for me.  I wanted something a little more personable.  Now I have two really great people helping me as well as Sage Whistler.  With out them I don’t know where I would be.

I have met so many great people on my journey.  Savannah Chase, Tess Mackall, Kissa Starling, AJ Llwewllyn, Faith Bicknell-Brown (we’ll get back to her)  :), TA Chase (I’ll say his name again just because I’m such a fan girl and he really does inspire me to be more like him.)  I’m sure there are many more because the writing community is so wonderful.  If I didn’t write your name down…I still love you, it is just early and hard to remember everyone!

Now back to Faith.  I’ve been writing other things while waiting to hear back from Samhain.  I actually won a short f/f contest which was AMAZING!  I’ve started writing a sequel to my first book, I have a cowboy story, a vampire story, a ghost story and a Pandora’s Box story.  During all this Faith put out a call for Freya’s Bower about a sweet anthology they were putting together.  Most of the stuff I write isn’t sweet so I wanted to try my hand at writing one.  I finished it and sent it in and waited.  I didn’t have long to wait.  Faith got back to me and let me know that I wasn’t accepted for the anthology, BUT if I did a couple things I could resubmitted.  I gave myself a little time to be sad and then pushed on to rewrite my story.  Finally…I was done and sent it back.  That was the hardest thing I ever had to do.  Even harder than pushing send for the first story I wrote because this short had already been rejected.  What if she didn’t like it, what if it wasn’t any good, does this mean my sub to Samhain would be rejected too, should I even be writing?  Those kinds of thoughts were rolling through my head.

My family has been planning a trip to the Indianapolis Zoo for a while.  It was a present to my son from his grandparents so we packed up the car and left Saturday and we didn’t get back until Sunday.  I was going to be with out internet for a day and a 1/2.  I was trying not to panic, but I knew I would have fun with the family so I let myself sit back and enjoy it!  After we where done with the zoo, we went back to the hotel and my husband found out they had a computer we could use!  Ohhh…I could check my email.  BUT…I fell asleep first.  On Sunday we went down for breakfast and the computer was taunting me.  Hey…it was!  lol  I finished up and had to check.  I’m scrolling through and there it was.  The email I was waiting for.  Should I open it?  What if it is bad news?  I took a deep breath and clicked it.  OMG!  I was offered a contract.  I looked over my husband and gave him a big grin.  He looked a little puzzled, but then he gave me big thumbs up and came over to read my mail.  WooHoo!  I was so excited.  The next thing I did was email, Nannette, Cindy, Joy and Valerie.  I had to let them know.  My time was limited on the computer so I didn’t let anyone else know until later that day.

I’m still on cloud nine!  I can’t believe that I can now say I’m a contracted author and can’t wait for the day that I can say I’m a published author.  It is closer than I ever thought possible.

I just want to thank my family and all my internet friends for helping me on my journey!

  1. Congratulations to you, colleague, and may this lead to bigger and better things…

  3. YAY!!!!!! ~L~ What a fabulous “the call” (or “the email”) story!! I’m so glad you didn’t give up, Jambrea. I know exactly how you were feeling before and the rough part is, that insecurity about your talent never really goes away. But with each success it gets easier to ignore and I’m SURE you’re destined for loads of success!!!!! YAY!!!!! I can’t wait to read your story!! Keep writing!! (I’m also dying to read the Pandora’s box story. Sounds cool. )

  10. it all started with Shiloh Walker.

    And here I was thinking…. HEY, I didn’t do anything…

But this is a cool thing. As much as I liked to take some credit…it didn’t start with me. Started with you. Writing starts with the writer….as in you.

    *big hugs and MAJOR congrats*

  20. I am so happy for you Jambrea! I admire you secretly by the way. When I got my first rejection I held onto the story for over a year. And they send me a full page of revisions to do! Live and learn. I’m much more thick-skinned these days.

I’m popping open the champagne and throwing confetti! And why haven’t you announced this at Kissa’s Karma Korner young lady? hee hee Huge congrats to you.

I think all authors who submit to companies are worried about whether their stories will be accepted or not. It’s part of the process and learning experience.
